South Korean Defense Minister Resigns Amid Political Unrest

In a surprising turn of events, South Korea’s Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun has stepped down from his position, submitting his resignation to President Yoon Suk-yeol. Apologizing to the nation, Kim acknowledged the growing unrest that has shaken the government in recent days.

The resignation follows the main opposition Democratic Party’s move to impeach the defense chief, citing turmoil over an emergency martial law declaration. On Tuesday night, President Yoon declared a short-lived martial law, sparking widespread controversy and political clashes.

Facing mounting pressure, President Yoon lifted the martial law early Wednesday after the National Assembly voted against it. The emergency measure had intensified political tensions, leading opposition parties to also seek the impeachment of the president himself over the handling of the crisis.

Amidst the upheaval, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and leaders from the ruling People Power Party gathered at the presidential office, likely to address the implications of the impeachment motions. Reports suggest that several cabinet ministers are prepared to resign collectively, hinting at possible significant changes within the government.

Despite the challenges, Prime Minister Han expressed his determination to “serve the public until the final moment,” emphasizing the government’s commitment to maintaining stability during this turbulent period.

These developments have captured the attention of the nation, especially among the youth who are increasingly engaged in the country’s political discourse. As South Korea navigates through this period of uncertainty, all eyes are on how the leadership will respond to the calls for change.
