Yoon Accepts Defense Ministers Resignation Amid Martial Law Crisis

South Korea’s Defense Minister Resigns Over Martial Law Controversy

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has accepted the resignation of Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun amid a crisis over the declaration of emergency martial law. Kim had proposed the imposition of martial law, which was enacted on Tuesday night but repealed early Wednesday after the parliament voted against it.

The outgoing defense minister offered his resignation on Wednesday, taking full responsibility for the emergency measure and apologizing for causing concern and confusion among the public. “I hereby resign to take all responsibility for the emergency martial law,” Kim stated.

In response, President Yoon’s office announced the nomination of Choi Byung-hyuk, currently serving as the ambassador to Saudi Arabia and a former army general, to lead the Defense Ministry. Choi’s military background is expected to bring stability to the ministry during this transitional period.
