China has issued a strong warning against efforts to seek U.S. support for Taiwan’s independence, stating that such attempts are destined to fail. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks on Friday in response to reports that Lai Ching-te, Taiwan’s leader, concluded his stopovers in Hawaii and Guam.
At a daily news briefing, Lin criticized the United States for arranging official exchanges during Lai’s transit through U.S. territories, accusing Washington of providing a platform for “Taiwan independence” activities. “The U.S. move seriously violates the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués,” Lin said. “It undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and sends a gravely wrong signal to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.”
Lin emphasized that the Taiwan question is the “first red line that cannot be crossed” in China-U.S. relations. He urged the U.S. to adhere to the one-China principle, which recognizes Taiwan as part of China, and to honor commitments made by U.S. leaders not to support Taiwan’s independence aspirations.
“Cross-Strait peace and stability and ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist activities are irreconcilable like water and fire,” Lin stated. He called on the U.S. to stop official interactions with Taiwan, cease “fudging and hollowing out” the one-China principle, and take concrete actions to stabilize relations between China and the U.S.
Lin warned that attempts to use the Taiwan issue to contain China are doomed to fail. “No one should underestimate the strong resolve, firm will, and capability of the Chinese government and people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.
