China Vows Continued Support for SCO as New Leader Takes the Helm

Beijing, China — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s (SCO) outgoing Secretary-General Zhang Ming and his successor Nurlan Yermekbayev on Friday. Wang pledged China’s continued support for the SCO, emphasizing its role in promoting international cooperation and regional prosperity.

Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, commended Zhang for his significant contributions to the SCO’s growth over the past three years. He congratulated Yermekbayev on his upcoming tenure, expressing confidence in his leadership.

“China is ready to work with other member states to build the SCO into a force stabilizing international order,” Wang stated. “We believe in the bright future of the SCO and are committed to making it a source of prosperity for our region.”

Holding the rotating presidency of the SCO, China is actively advancing the organization’s initiatives. Wang highlighted achievements made under the “Shanghai Spirit,” fostering practical cooperation and enhancing the SCO’s international influence.

Zhang Ming reflected on his term, noting progress made with the support of member states and China. “We’ve promoted cooperation in various fields and worked towards a community with a shared future for all,” he said.

Yermekbayev praised China’s leadership within the SCO. “I will fully support the Chinese presidency and collaborate to prepare for next year’s SCO summit,” he affirmed.

Founded in 2001, the SCO is a Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance aiming to promote mutual trust and cooperation among member states.
