President Xi Jinping has commended Macao for its remarkable achievements over the past five years, describing them as ‘extraordinary.’ Speaking at a welcome dinner hosted by the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government on the eve of the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to China, Xi praised the region’s steady economic recovery and progress in various fields.
Amid global transformations and challenges posed by the pandemic, Xi highlighted how the fifth-term SAR government, along with the people of Macao, rose to the occasion. He acknowledged the advancements in economic diversification, improvements in people’s well-being, and the solid foundation rooted in love for both the nation and Macao.
“These remarkable achievements are the result of the full and faithful implementation of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy, support from the central government and mainland, and the hard work of Macao’s people,” Xi stated.
Looking ahead, Xi urged Macao to align with national development strategies such as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area initiative. He encouraged the region to embrace greater openness, inclusiveness, and solidarity, attracting talent to build a better future.
“We need stronger resolve and greater courage in reform and innovation,” Xi emphasized, suggesting that Macao leverage the unique advantages of the “One Country, Two Systems” framework to break new ground.
Outgoing Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng expressed confidence that the incoming Chief Executive, Sam Hou Fai, will lead Macao in writing a new chapter in the practice of “One Country, Two Systems” with Macao characteristics.
As Macao celebrates its 25th anniversary of returning to China, the region stands poised to continue its development and contribute to the broader goals of national rejuvenation.
