Macau, China—Chinese President Xi Jinping has commended Macau’s impressive transformation over the past two decades since its return to China in 1999. Speaking on Friday, Xi highlighted the region’s significant strides in economic and social development.
“The practice of ‘One Country, Two Systems’ with Macau characteristics has been a tremendous success,” Xi stated. He emphasized that the systems implementing this policy have been continuously improved, effectively safeguarding national sovereignty, security, and development interests.
Under the “One Country, Two Systems” framework, Macau has seen a historic rise in prosperity. Local residents are experiencing increased fulfillment, happiness, and security, Xi noted. The region’s international cooperation efforts have also expanded, enhancing its global standing.
Xi pointed out that Macau’s role as a world tourism and leisure center has been strengthened. Additionally, it continues to serve as a vital commercial and trade cooperation platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries. “Macau is a base for exchange and cooperation where Chinese culture is the mainstream and diverse cultures coexist,” he added.
The president’s remarks underscore China’s commitment to supporting Macau’s unique position and ongoing development within the broader national framework.
