Hamas claims that new Israeli demands are causing delays in reaching a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Despite setbacks, negotiations are ongoing under the mediation of Qatar and Egypt.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Hamas said, \”The ceasefire and prisoner exchange negotiations are continuing in Doha under the mediation of Qatar and Egypt in a serious manner… but the occupation has set new conditions concerning withdrawal, the ceasefire, prisoners, and the return of displaced people, which has delayed reaching an agreement.\”
Efforts led by Qatari, Egyptian, and U.S. mediators have shown progress, according to Israeli and Palestinian media reports, but a breakthrough remains elusive.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been conducting a large-scale offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. This offensive followed a Hamas attack on the southern Israeli border, during which approximately 1,200 people were killed and about 250 taken hostage.
The Gaza-based health authorities reported on Wednesday that the Palestinian death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks has risen to 45,361.
Negotiations aim to halt the hostilities and address the humanitarian crisis affecting millions in the region. The international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that will bring peace to the area.
