Port Vila, Vanuatu — Hope arrived on Thursday as a 35-tonne shipment of emergency relief supplies from China touched down in Vanuatu’s capital, bringing vital aid to communities devastated by last week’s powerful earthquake.
The 7.3-magnitude quake struck Port Vila on December 17, leaving at least 14 people dead, over 200 injured, and countless others homeless. Buildings crumbled, streets cracked, and essential services were disrupted.
The aid package from China includes tents, folding beds, solar lights, food, water purification equipment, and medical supplies — essentials for those affected.
“We deeply understand the significant damage caused by the recent earthquake,” said Chinese Ambassador Li Minggang at the handover ceremony. “China stands shoulder to shoulder with Vanuatu and is committed to supporting your recovery.”
Vanuatu’s caretaker Prime Minister Charlot Salwai thanked China for its swift response. “This timely assistance means a lot to us,” he said. “International support like this is vital as we begin to rebuild.”
The arrival of aid brings not just supplies, but also a message of solidarity. As Vanuatu works to overcome the challenges ahead, the support from global partners lights the path to recovery.
