Mainland Official Stresses Importance of Promoting Cross straits Ties

Chinese Official Urges Closer Ties with Taiwan for Shared Future

Chinese mainland official Song Tao met with Rao Ching-ling, the head of Taiwan’s Taitung County, in Beijing on Saturday. During the meeting, Song emphasized the importance of strengthening relations across the Taiwan Straits and opposing any moves toward “Taiwan independence.”

“People on both sides of the Taiwan Straits are one family,” Song said. “We should stay close and united.” He highlighted the mainland’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of all compatriots and promoting peaceful and integrated development between the two sides.

Song, who heads the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, stressed the need to adhere to the 1992 Consensus—a mutual understanding that there is only one China—and to work together for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Rao Ching-ling expressed gratitude for the mainland’s decision to resume and expand shipments of sugar apples from Taitung, a key agricultural product for the county. “Cross-Straits exchanges based on upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing ‘Taiwan independence’ will promote peaceful development and benefit people on both sides,” she said.

The meeting underscores ongoing efforts to enhance cooperation and unity across the Taiwan Straits, aiming for a shared and prosperous future.
