Israel and Hamas Agree to Ceasefire After 15 Months of Conflict

After more than 15 months of intense conflict, Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire deal set to begin on Sunday. The humanitarian crisis has been devastating, with over 46,000 Palestinian lives lost and more than 1,200 Israelis killed, according to health authorities in Gaza and Israel.

A Timeline of the Conflict

October 7, 2023: Hamas launched a large-scale attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 people and the capture of approximately 250 hostages.

October 8, 2023: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a “state of war” and pledged to dismantle Hamas, initiating widespread air strikes on Gaza.

October 27, 2023: Israel launched a large-scale ground invasion into Gaza, escalating the conflict further.

November 24, 2023: A temporary four-day ceasefire brokered by mediators, including Qatar, took effect, briefly halting hostilities. The ceasefire was extended twice, eventually lasting until December 1. During this period, more than 100 hostages were freed from Gaza, and Israel released 240 Palestinian detainees.

December 2, 2023: Israeli air strikes on Gaza resumed as the ceasefire came to an end.

August 15-16, 2024: A fresh round of negotiations was held in Doha, involving representatives from Israel, Qatar, the United States, and Egypt. While mediators described the talks as constructive, Hamas criticized the proposals as favoring Israel and prolonging Palestinian suffering.

November 9, 2024: Qatar suspended mediation efforts, citing a lack of serious intent from both sides. It stated that talks would resume when conditions improved.

December 7, 2024: Qatar announced renewed momentum for negotiations, leading to the resumption of mediation efforts.

January 15, 2025: Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire-for-hostages deal set to start on Sunday. According to the agreement, Hamas will release 33 hostages in the first phase over six weeks, in exchange for the release of Palestinian detainees.

Hope for Peace

The ceasefire agreement brings a ray of hope to a region that has witnessed prolonged suffering and destruction. Global leaders and organizations have welcomed the deal, emphasizing the need for lasting peace and stability.

The coming weeks will be critical as both sides work towards honoring the agreement and potentially paving the way for more comprehensive peace negotiations in the future.
