Clashes in Colombia Displace Thousands as Peace Talks Stall

Violent clashes between the National Liberation Army (ELN) and FARC dissidents in Colombia have taken a heavy toll over the last week. Officials report that more than 52,000 people have been displaced, with an additional 32,000 trapped in their homes due to the ongoing conflict. The surge in violence has also resulted in 52 new homicides, raising serious concerns about the country’s peace process.

Carlos Velandia, the government’s Peace Advisor and former head of the ELN, addressed the critical situation regarding the state of the peace process. The setbacks in negotiations have alarmed many who hoped for lasting peace after decades of conflict.

The escalation threatens to undermine progress made since previous peace agreements. Communities affected by the violence are facing disruptions to their daily lives, with youth and families particularly impacted by displacement and insecurity.

The Colombian government is under increasing pressure to address the violence and work toward resuming peace talks. Local organizations and international observers are calling for immediate action to protect civilians and restore hope for a peaceful resolution.
