New York City, USA — Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, delivered a powerful message on Tuesday, asserting that tariffs and trade wars cannot solve international problems or hinder China’s development.
Speaking at the 20th anniversary gala of the China General Chamber of Commerce-USA (CGCC), Ambassador Xie emphasized that tariff threats are ineffective against the Chinese people. “They would only undermine the foundation of China-U.S. counternarcotics and economic cooperation, and raise costs for American households and businesses,” he stated.
Xie highlighted China’s proactive measures in combating the fentanyl crisis, noting that China is the first country to officially schedule fentanyl-related substances as a whole category and enforce the strictest controls. “The outcomes of China-U.S. counternarcotics cooperation are there for everyone to see,” he remarked.
He warned that imposing additional tariffs on China under the pretext of the fentanyl issue would be counterproductive. Instead, Ambassador Xie called for a stable, healthy, and sustainable China-U.S. relationship to foster economic cooperation and mutual benefits.
The ambassador urged business communities on both sides to stay committed, seize opportunities, and support stronger bilateral ties. “A positive and collaborative relationship is essential for the prosperity of both nations,” he concluded.
