China’s top diplomat Wang Yi has called on Australia to continue respecting China’s core interests and major concerns, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the political foundation of their bilateral relationship. Speaking during a meeting with Australian officials, Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the stabilization of China-Australia relations under the strategic guidance of both nations’ leaders.
“The return of China-Australia relations to a path of sound and stable development serves the common interests of both sides and aligns with the aspirations of our peoples,” Wang stated. He expressed China’s willingness to work with Australia to build a more mature, stable, and fruitful comprehensive strategic partnership.
Addressing the current complex international landscape, Wang stressed that all countries should practice true multilateralism. “Major countries, in particular, should take the lead in firmly opposing efforts to reverse the course of history and resist a return to the ‘law of the jungle,'” he said. Wang also affirmed China’s readiness to cooperate with the international community, including Australia, to uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong remarked on the positive strides made in various fields of interaction between China and Australia. “Our economic and trade relations have fully recovered, sending positive signals,” she noted. Australia adheres to the one-China policy and is committed to strengthening cooperation with China in areas that serve their respective national interests, uphold the international rule of law and strategic security, and jointly address global challenges, Wong added.
The reaffirmation of mutual respect and commitment between China and Australia marks a significant step in enhancing their comprehensive strategic partnership, offering promising prospects for cooperation in the face of global challenges.
