In a bold move to strengthen his country’s defense, Poland’s President Andrzej Duda has called on the United States to deploy nuclear weapons on Polish territory. The proposal aims to deter potential aggression from Russia and shift NATO’s strategic infrastructure further east.
President Duda discussed the issue with Keith Kellogg, the U.S. special envoy for Ukraine and Russia. Emphasizing the need for NATO’s assets to reflect its expanded borders, Duda stated, “The borders of NATO moved east in 1999, so 26 years later there should also be a shift of the NATO infrastructure east. For me this is obvious.”
He added that it would be safer if these weapons were already deployed in Poland, highlighting concerns over regional security. Poland, which joined NATO in 1999, has been a strong advocate for a greater alliance presence in Eastern Europe.
The call for U.S. nuclear weapons on Polish soil marks a significant request that could reshape NATO’s strategic posture. Currently, the deployment of U.S. nuclear weapons in Europe is limited to select countries. Any expansion would require careful deliberation among NATO members and could heighten tensions with Russia.
