This year marks the 20th anniversary of China’s Anti-Secession Law, a significant milestone in the nation’s journey toward unity. Enacted by the National People’s Congress in 2005, the law has been pivotal in deterring separatist movements and maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait.
At a symposium held on Friday, China’s top legislator Zhao Leji emphasized the importance of national reunification. “Resolving the Taiwan question and realizing China’s complete reunification is a shared aspiration of all the sons and daughters of the Chinese nation,” Zhao stated.
The Anti-Secession Law was introduced during a time when separatist sentiments were on the rise. It firmly upholds the one-China principle, outlining clear provisions to prevent any attempts at secession. The law asserts that both the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China, and safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity is the common obligation of all Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots.
Over the past two decades, the law has played a crucial role in countering separatist activities and fostering stability in the region. It has provided a legal framework for opposing external interference and supporting peaceful reunification efforts.
Zhao highlighted the progress made in cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, emphasizing the need to deepen economic ties and cultural connections. Trade between the mainland and Taiwan reached $292.97 billion last year, reflecting steady growth and mutual benefits. The number of new Taiwan-funded enterprises on the mainland also increased, showcasing resilient investment activity.
Youth exchanges have further strengthened bonds, with programs fostering understanding and friendships between young people on both sides of the strait. These interactions highlight the shared heritage and aspirations of the Chinese nation.
Looking ahead, the focus remains on promoting unity and prosperity. By building on the foundations laid over the past 20 years, China continues its journey toward complete reunification, emphasizing shared values and a collective future.
