China’s top legislator, Zhao Leji, has called for strong action against separatist activities related to Taiwan, emphasizing the importance of national unity. Speaking at a symposium in Beijing marking the 20th anniversary of the enforcement of the Anti-Secession Law, Zhao underscored China’s commitment to opposing “Taiwan independence” and promoting reunification.
Zhao, who serves as chairman of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, highlighted the nation’s efforts over the past two decades in enriching the legal framework to combat separatism and interference from external forces. “Resolving the Taiwan question and realizing China’s complete reunification is a shared aspiration of all the sons and daughters of the Chinese nation,” he stated.
He stressed the need to strengthen confidence in advancing national reunification by safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity, promoting cross-Straits exchanges, and fostering a strong sense of community among the Chinese people. Zhao also called for the promotion of Chinese culture to unite people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
The symposium was attended by key officials, including the director of the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, the head of the NPC Constitution and Law Committee, the commander of the Eastern Theater Command of the People’s Liberation Army, and representatives from Taiwan.
