China has criticized the United States for its latest sanctions targeting countries that import Venezuelan oil, calling for mutual respect and cooperation in international relations.
On Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun spoke out against the U.S. move, describing it as an abuse of unilateral sanctions and “long-arm jurisdiction” that interferes with other nations’ affairs.
“The U.S. has repeatedly misused its power to impose illegal unilateral sanctions and extend its reach into other countries,” Guo said during a press briefing. “Such actions openly interfere with the internal affairs of other nations and disrupt the norms of international relations.”
The criticism follows the U.S. announcement of new sanctions aimed at countries and companies purchasing oil from Venezuela, as part of efforts to pressure Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s government.
Guo urged the U.S. to rethink its strategy, emphasizing that “sanctions and pressure won’t solve the issues” and advocating for dialogue and negotiation instead. “Trade wars and sanctions benefit no one—they only add burdens to businesses and consumers around the world,” he added.
Meanwhile, President Maduro reaffirmed his dedication to economic recovery. “Our battle today is to produce, supply, export, and develop,” he said on state television, highlighting initiatives to overcome economic hurdles.
