China Holds Drills in Response to Lai Ching-te’s Secessionist Actions

China recently conducted a two-day joint military exercise around the island of Taiwan and in the central and southern areas of the Taiwan Strait. Officials stated that the drills were a stern warning in response to secessionist attempts by Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te.

Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense, emphasized on Wednesday that the exercises demonstrated China’s determination to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. He added that the drills serve as a strong deterrent to those who intentionally provoke conflicts.

Zhang condemned the Taiwan authorities, led by Lai, for recklessly carrying out provocative actions aimed at pursuing “Taiwan independence” and escalating tensions across the Taiwan Strait.

Many residents of Taiwan echoed these sentiments, expressing concern over the rising tensions. “The personal will of Lai Ching-te has caused the current situation. I think things have gotten worse because of him,” said Kuo, a local resident.

Others called for peace and mutual development between both sides. “I am hoping for peaceful development of cross-strait ties. Please stop the so-called ‘Taiwan independence’ activities,” said Chen, another resident of Taiwan.

There have also been instances where individuals who oppose “Taiwan independence” or advocate for improved cross-strait relations have faced repercussions. One notable case involved a woman from the Chinese mainland, married to a man in Taiwan, who expressed her support for China’s reunification online. Using the nickname Yaya, she had her residence permit revoked by the Taiwan authorities and was forced to leave, separating her from her husband and three children. Similar actions were taken against two other mainland spouses.

“Through this incident, it feels like there are things we’re not allowed to say. Will I also be kicked out if I speak freely?” shared another woman from the Chinese mainland married to a Taiwan resident.

Additionally, a police officer in Taoyuan faced investigation simply for describing himself as “Chinese” on his social media account.

An op-ed published on Thursday stated, “No sovereign nation turns a blind eye to attempts of territorial division. China is no exception. The drills demonstrate the mainland’s consistent efforts to uphold peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and to safeguard the safety and well-being of compatriots in Taiwan.”

The joint military exercises highlight the ongoing tensions and the complexities of cross-strait relations. Many hope for a peaceful resolution and the promotion of mutual understanding between both sides.
