Chinese President Xi Jinping has cautioned that tariffs and trade wars are harmful to all nations, disrupting global economic stability and fairness.
Speaking on Wednesday during discussions with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, President Xi highlighted that imposing tariffs and engaging in trade conflicts undermine the rights and interests of countries worldwide.
“Tariffs and trade wars hurt everyone,” Xi stated. “They weaken the multilateral trading system and disrupt the global economic order.”
He emphasized China’s readiness to work with Azerbaijan and other nations to protect the international system anchored by the United Nations and uphold international laws. “We must firmly protect our legitimate rights and interests and defend international fairness and justice,” Xi added.
Trade wars typically involve countries imposing tariffs or other barriers on each other’s imports, leading to economic tension. Xi’s comments reflect concerns that such practices can hinder global cooperation and economic growth, affecting both developed and developing nations.
The meeting underscores China’s commitment to promoting open trade and collaboration, aiming to ensure a stable and fair economic environment for all countries, especially those in the Global South.
