Us Chamber of Commerce Warns Tariffs Hurting Small Businesses

U.S. Chamber of Commerce Urges Tariff Relief to Save Small Businesses

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has called on the White House to provide immediate tariff relief, warning that ongoing tariffs are causing “irreparable harm” to small businesses and could lead to an economic recession.

In a letter sent on Wednesday to key members of the administration, including the Treasury Secretary, the Commerce Secretary, and the Trade Representative, the Chamber emphasized the urgent need for action to support America’s small businesses.

“The Chamber requests the administration take immediate action to save America’s small businesses and stave off a recession,” the letter read.

The Chamber urged the administration to address the impacts of tariffs by:

  • Granting automatic exclusions for any small business importer.
  • Establishing a process for companies to apply for an exclusion if tariffs pose a risk to employment for American workers.
  • Providing exclusions for all products that cannot be produced in the United States or are not readily available.

“As each day goes by, small businesses are increasingly endangered by higher costs and interrupted supply chains that will cause irreparable harm,” said Suzanne P. Clark, president and CEO of the Chamber, in a statement released on Thursday.

“Whether it is coffee, bananas, cocoa, minerals, or numerous other products, the reality is certain things just can’t be produced in the United States,” she added. “Raising prices on those products will only hurt families struggling to pay their bills.”

The Chamber’s plea highlights the challenges faced by small businesses dealing with increased costs due to tariffs on imported goods. Many essential products are imported because they cannot be produced domestically, and tariffs on these items lead to higher prices for consumers.

The ongoing trade policies have disrupted supply chains and increased operational costs, putting many small businesses at risk. The Chamber’s call for tariff relief aims to protect these businesses and prevent potential job losses and economic downturn.
