Chinese Premier Li Qiang has expressed China’s readiness to strengthen cooperation with Greece, highlighting opportunities in clean energy, artificial intelligence, and more. Li met with Greek Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis during a stopover on the island of Rhodes, Greece, en route to the 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil.

During their meeting, Li noted the significant progress made since the heads of state from both countries met in November 2023. He emphasized that China and Greece have actively implemented the outcomes of that visit, promoting high-quality development through the Belt and Road Initiative, and bringing tangible benefits to both nations.

With the 20th anniversary of the China-Greece comprehensive strategic partnership approaching next year, Li expressed China’s willingness to collaborate closely with Greece. He highlighted the importance of supporting each other’s core interests, expanding practical cooperation, and achieving concrete results.

Li pointed out that China is eager to enhance cooperation in areas such as clean energy, power transmission, and artificial intelligence. He encouraged capable Chinese enterprises to invest in Greece, fostering new drivers for economic growth. Furthermore, he advocated for increased cultural exchanges and tourism to strengthen the friendship between the peoples of both countries.

Addressing broader international concerns, Li mentioned that China and the European Union share extensive common interests. In the face of rising unilateralism and protectionism, he called for China and the EU to support multilateralism and free trade, working together to safeguard global economic and trade order. He expressed hope that Greece would play a constructive role in promoting China-EU relations.

Deputy Prime Minister Hatzidakis acknowledged the deep historical ties between the two ancient civilizations. He affirmed Greece’s commitment to developing its relations with China, implementing the consensus reached by their leaders. Hatzidakis expressed Greece’s readiness to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, shipping, energy, and tourism, and to strengthen dialogue between civilizations.

Hatzidakis also highlighted Greece’s willingness to coordinate with China on multilateral issues, uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and address global challenges like climate change. He added that Greece aims to contribute to the development of EU-China relations.

The meeting between Li and Hatzidakis signifies a mutual commitment to deepening ties and cooperation, setting the stage for a strengthened partnership as they approach two decades of strategic collaboration.
