Six Chinese table tennis stars have surged into the quarterfinals of the World Table Tennis (WTT) Champions Frankfurt in Germany, showcasing China’s dominance in the sport.
In the women’s singles, top seed Wang Manyu overcame South Korea’s Joo Cheon-hui with scores of 11-7, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8. Wang is set to face fellow Chinese player Qian Tianyi in the next round. Qian impressed the crowd by defeating Japan’s fifth seed Mima Ito in straight sets, 11-3, 11-1, 12-10.
“I haven’t played against Qian for a long time,” Wang said after her match. “She’s in great form and has been performing well recently. I need to prepare myself for a tough battle.”
Wildcard entrant He Zhuojia caused an upset by eliminating sixth seed Cheng I-Ching of Chinese Taipei with a convincing 11-4, 11-6, 12-10 victory. She’s set to challenge Japan’s third seed Miwa Harimoto in the quarterfinals.
Second seed Wang Yidi cruised past Romanian veteran Elizabeta Samara, winning 11-6, 11-5, 11-8. Wang will compete against South Korea’s seventh seed Shin Yu-bin for a spot in the semifinals.
The fourth women’s quarterfinal will feature China’s fourth seed Chen Xingtong against Japan’s eighth seed Satsuki Odo, promising another thrilling encounter.
In the men’s singles, Lin Shidong emerged as the sole Chinese player advancing to the quarterfinals. The second seed defeated Germany’s Benedikt Duda 11-4, 11-9, 11-7. Lin will face Japan’s Sora Matsushima in his next match.
