Josko Gvardiol scored a crucial equalizer as Croatia battled to a 1-1 draw against Portugal in a UEFA Nations League Group A1 match on Monday. The result sees both teams advance to the March 2025 quarterfinals.
Playing at home in Split, Croatia fell behind when Portugal’s Joao Felix expertly controlled Vitinha’s pass and fired past goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic. Despite Portugal resting star forward Cristiano Ronaldo, they looked dangerous throughout the first half.
Croatia fought back, coming close when Gvardiol set up Andrej Kramaric, whose shot hit the post. The equalizer finally came when Kristijan Jakic’s cross found Gvardiol at the back post, and the defender headed home his first international goal since the 2022 World Cup.
Both sides had chances to win it late on. Livakovic made a brilliant save to deny Nuno Mendes, while Portugal’s goalkeeper Jose Sa kept out Ante Budimir’s effort before the Croatian striker hit the post.
In the end, the draw was enough for Croatia to secure second place in Group A1 with eight points from six games, while Portugal, already assured of top spot, finished with a strong showing despite missing key players.
Scotland Secure Playoff Spot with Last-Minute Win Over Poland
In another thrilling Group A1 encounter, Scotland clinched a relegation playoff spot with a 2-1 victory over Poland in Warsaw. Andy Robertson was the hero, heading home the winner in stoppage time.
Scotland took an early lead through John McGinn, who struck in the third minute. Poland responded with several chances, and eventually equalized in the 59th minute when Kamil Piatkowski unleashed a stunning shot into the top corner.
Just when it seemed the match would end in a draw, Robertson connected with John Souttar’s cross to secure the win. The result means Scotland finish third in their group with seven points, while Poland are relegated to League B for the first time since the competition began in 2018.
