The 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities kicked off in Sanya, Hainan Province, on Friday night, promising a spectacular showcase of China’s rich cultural diversity. The event, one of the country’s oldest national multi-sport games since its inception in 1953, runs from November 22 to 30.
Over 10,000 athletes representing all of China’s 56 ethnic groups have gathered on the tropical island to compete in 139 events across 17 sports, along with three demonstration sports. The Games aim to celebrate and promote the unique traditions and athletic talents of the nation’s ethnic minorities.
The opening ceremony, directed by Sha Xiaolan, was a vibrant display of cultural heritage and modern creativity. “It’s a signature of ethnic minorities,” Sha said. “Each delegation has a 30-second performance when they enter the stadium. Although it’s short, everyone has tried their best to make it a highlight.”
Audiences were treated to innovative presentations featuring Hainan’s stunning landscapes, including its beaches, islands, and coconut forests. The use of digital technology brought these scenes to life, creating an immersive experience that blended tradition with modern artistry.
Special effects highlighted the numbers “56” and “12,” symbolizing China’s 56 ethnic groups and the 12th edition of the Games. “The opening ceremony will deliver unique excellence, and it will be worth your time,” Sha promised.
The National Traditional Games not only provide a platform for athletic competition but also foster unity and mutual understanding among China’s diverse ethnic communities. As the Games unfold, participants and spectators alike will have the opportunity to celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures that make up the nation.
