On November 22, 2024, the vibrant city of Sanya in China’s Hainan Province came alive as the 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities officially opened. The spectacular opening ceremony featured over 5,000 performers, captivating a crowd of 35,000 spectators with a two-hour showcase of cultural diversity.
Each of China’s 56 ethnic minority delegations presented a unique 30-second performance, highlighting the rich tapestry of traditions and customs that make up the nation’s cultural heritage.
Over the next eight days, nearly 7,000 athletes will compete in more than 160 events across 18 sports categories. The games will feature a variety of traditional sports cherished by ethnic communities, including crossbow shooting, single-bamboo drifting, and pearl ball.
The National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities, held every four years, aim to promote unity and cultural exchange among China’s diverse ethnic groups. This year’s event in Sanya promises to be a celebration of heritage, athleticism, and shared values.
