Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner capped off a remarkable season by leading Italy to their second consecutive Davis Cup title with a commanding 2-0 victory over the Netherlands in Malaga, Spain, on Sunday.
World number one Sinner delivered a stellar performance against Tallon Griekspoor, securing a 7-6(2), 6-2 win in the second singles match. This victory followed Matteo Berrettini’s solid 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Botic van de Zandschulp in the first singles clash, sealing Italy’s third Davis Cup title after previous wins in 2023 and 1976.
“It’s an incredible feeling to win the Davis Cup again,” Sinner said after the match. “We’ve worked hard all season, and to finish off like this is amazing.”
The Netherlands, making their first Davis Cup final appearance in 104 years under captain Paul Haarhuis, were seeking their maiden title in the competition. Despite their best efforts, they were overpowered by a formidable Italian team.
Van de Zandschulp, who impressed earlier in the week, couldn’t find his rhythm against Berrettini. Sinner faced a tight first set but ultimately overwhelmed Griekspoor in the second, maintaining his perfect record in the competition.
Sinner’s success with Italy caps a season where he also captured the ATP Finals title and two Grand Slam victories, solidifying his place at the pinnacle of men’s tennis.
