Guizhou Province clinched gold in the standard crossbow mixed team event at the 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities held in Sanya, Hainan Province. Three-time participant and Miao ethnic athlete, Liu Xingyu, secured the victory with a decisive final shot scoring nine points, bringing the team’s total to 191.
Crossbow shooting is a cherished tradition in the southwestern provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The Miao and Yi ethnic groups are renowned for their expertise in this ancient sport. “I’m from the Miao ethnic group,” Liu shared. “We used to use the crossbow for hunting, but now it’s a sport and a form of recreation. Shooting a crossbow is similar to archery but with a trigger like a rifle.”
Liu emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage through such events. “Competing promotes cultural and sporting exchanges among ethnic minority groups,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity to further develop traditional sports. I’m very happy to be a part of this for the third time, and I hope there are many more to come.”
This marks Guizhou’s second title in crossbow events at the games, following Wang Renai’s win in the traditional crossbow men’s standing position final on Sunday.
