It’s not every day that fans get to experience a thrilling race alongside an Olympic legend. During the Beijing stop of the ISU Short Track World Tour, CGTN editor Shen Xiang had the unique opportunity to watch the men’s 500m race with three-time Olympian and Kazakh national icon, Abzal Azhgaliyev.
Azhgaliyev made history in 2016 as the first Kazakh short track skater to win a World Cup event, clinching victory in the 500m at Salt Lake City. He proudly carried Kazakhstan’s flag at the opening ceremonies of both the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games and the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, symbolizing his nation’s pride.
In an engaging conversation with Shen, the 32-year-old athlete shared his thoughts on the upgraded World Tour and the sleek new suit designs. He praised the state-of-the-art ice rink and facilities at Beijing’s Capital Indoor Stadium, noting how they enhance the competition experience for athletes.
Azhgaliyev also lauded China’s rising star, Sun Long, for his outstanding performance in the men’s 500m race. He highlighted Sun’s remarkable versatility on the ice, suggesting a bright future ahead for the young skater.
Reflecting on his own journey, Azhgaliyev expressed his determination to surpass his fourth-place finish at the Beijing 2022 Olympics. With his sights set on the 2026 Games, he is more committed than ever to bringing glory to Kazakhstan and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
