In a thrilling opener at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah, China’s rising star Shang Juncheng faced a tough defeat against France’s Luca Van Assche. The 19-year-old Shang, currently ranked World No. 50, started strong by taking the opening set tiebreak 7-3, showcasing his powerful forehand winners.
Shang, who recently celebrated his first tour-level title in Chengdu last month, continued to display resilience. He fought back in the second set, securing a 4-2 win with a decisive forehand volley. However, Van Assche, the World No. 128 and Australian Open third-round contender, dominated the third set with a 4-1 victory.
The fourth set intensified as both players pushed into another tiebreaker. Ultimately, Van Assche clinched the match 4-3(5) after Shang’s forehand shot went wide. The Frenchman, 20, showcased impressive skill and composure under pressure.
Looking ahead, Van Assche is set to face America’s Alex Michelsen, while Shang will compete against another American, Nishesh Basavareddy, later on Thursday. The tournament continues to heat up as these young talents vie for the title.
