China’s Yang Kaiwen has made history by reaching his first-ever final in a major world ‘go’ tournament, the 15th Chunlan Cup, held in Changjiang, Hainan Province.
In an impressive display of skill, the 27-year-old defeated South Korea’s defending champion, Byun Sang-il, in the semifinals. Playing with the black pieces, Yang secured his spot in the final after a gripping deciding set.
This achievement marks a significant milestone in Yang’s career. Last year, he clinched his first national title, and earlier this year, he made headlines by defeating South Korea’s top player Shin Jin-seo in the round of 16. Yang described that victory as the most significant match of his career.
During the second phase of the Chunlan Cup, Yang continued his remarkable form. With five Chinese players competing, he overcame his compatriot and world champion, Li Xuanhao, before taking down Byun Sang-il.
Looking ahead to the final next March, Yang will face South Korea’s Park Jung-hwan, who defeated Japan’s Shibano Toramaru in the other semifinal. The upcoming face-off promises to be an exciting culmination of the tournament.
The Chunlan Cup, a prestigious international ‘go’ competition, attracts top players from around the world. Yang’s journey to the final not only showcases his personal talent but also highlights the strong presence of Chinese players in the global ‘go’ community.
