China Defeats Ukraine to Reach Water Polo World Cup Semifinals

China has secured a spot in the semifinals of the Water Polo World Cup Men’s Division 2 after a commanding 17-11 victory over Ukraine on Friday in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Entering the match as group leaders following wins over Great Britain and Portugal, China took control early on. They dominated the first three quarters with scores of 5-4, 4-2, and an impressive 6-1 in the third quarter.

Standout performances came from Chen Zhongxian and Chen Yimin, who each netted four goals. Their offensive prowess helped build a lead that proved insurmountable for Ukraine.

Despite Ukraine’s efforts to rally in the final quarter, outscoring China 4-2, the deficit was too large to overcome. Ukrainian player Oktavian Veklyuk scored four goals, bringing his tournament total to 14.

China was efficient with their penalty opportunities, converting three out of four, while Ukraine capitalized on both of theirs.

The victory sets up a challenging semifinal clash with Germany later on Saturday. With momentum on their side, China will look to continue their winning streak and advance to the finals.
