China’s Hu Zhean Upsets Former World Champion Loh at King Cup

China’s 18-year-old badminton prodigy Hu Zhean delivered a stunning performance at the inaugural King Cup in Shenzhen, defeating former world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore in straight games on Friday.

In front of an enthusiastic home crowd, Hu showcased exceptional skill and composure, winning 21-15, 21-15 to secure his spot in the semifinals where he will face India’s Lakshya Sen.

“I faced a very strong opponent at the start of this event,” Hu said after the match. “We both performed well, but I was more decisive on some key points. This is my first time competing against top players, so it was very difficult to win the match, and I am very excited.”

The King Cup, backed by Chinese badminton legend Lin Dan, features only men’s singles matches in its first edition. The tournament has attracted top talent, including Denmark’s world No. 2 Anders Antonsen and Thailand’s former world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn.

In other quarterfinal action, France’s Alex Lanier battled back from a game down to defeat China’s Wang Zijun 15-21, 21-17, 21-19. The 19-year-old Lanier will face Antonsen in the semifinals.

With Hu’s impressive victory over Loh, badminton fans are eagerly watching the rise of a new star in the sport. The semifinals promise more thrilling matches as the young talents continue to shine at the King Cup.
