Yang Yongqiang Claims WBO Lightweight Crown in Haikou Showdown

China’s rising boxing star Yang Yongqiang delivered a spectacular performance on Saturday night, securing the WBO inter-continental lightweight title in front of an electrified home crowd in Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province.

Facing off against Kazakhstan’s Ablaykhan Khusainov, Yang entered the ring undefeated with a perfect record of 16 wins, including 12 knockouts. Khusainov, boasting a strong 13-1 record, proved a formidable opponent. The bout began with both fighters displaying caution, but Yang soon took control with swift jabs and agile footwork, keeping Khusainov at bay.

As the rounds progressed, Khusainov attempted to corner Yang with aggressive combinations, but Yang’s defense and counterattacks were relentless. From the eighth round onward, the intensity peaked, with fierce exchanges thrilling the audience. After 12 grueling rounds, the judges awarded Yang a unanimous decision victory.

“I hope Chinese boxing can develop in all areas,” Yang said after his triumph. “I also hope our fighters, like Zhang Zhilei and Xu Can, can achieve great results on the international stage as soon as possible. We have a heavy task ahead, so I will reflect on my shortcomings and work on improving.”

In another highlight of the evening, China’s Lyu Bin faced undefeated Filipino fighter Vencent Lacar for the WBO oriental flyweight title. Despite Lyu’s efforts to adapt and find openings, Lacar’s height, reach advantage, and speed proved decisive. After 10 intense rounds, Lacar emerged victorious with a split decision, claiming the title.
