The Chinese Football Association (CFA) has unveiled a list of 49 clubs set to compete in the professional leagues for the 2025 season. In a surprising turn of events, eight-time Chinese Super League champions Guangzhou FC are notably absent from the roster.
Among the missing are the Cangzhou Mighty Lions and third-tier Hunan Xiangtao. The 49 clubs that secured their spots, including reigning CSL champions Shanghai Port, did so after undergoing a rigorous process. This involved material submissions, approvals by member associations, CFA reviews, debt repayment announcements, and resolving any outstanding complaints within the stipulated time.
Guangzhou FC, along with Cangzhou and Hunan, failed to meet the necessary requirements and consequently will not participate in the upcoming season. The CFA stated it will continue to address issues with clubs that did not secure eligibility due to arrears and debts.
This development marks a significant shift in China’s football landscape, leaving fans eager to see how the new season unfolds without some of its traditional powerhouses.
