Chinese Players Fall Short in Womens Singles at Australian Open

Chinese Tennis Stars Exit Women’s Singles at Australian Open

China’s hopes at the Australian Open were dashed as Wang Xiyu, Zhang Shuai, and Wang Yafan exited the women’s singles in the second round on Thursday. Their departures came shortly after Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen faced a surprising defeat against German veteran Laura Siegemund with a score of 7-6, 6-3.

In total, Chinese players have concluded their singles campaigns in Melbourne, with eight women and three men participating this year. Wang Xiyu put up a valiant effort against World No. 8 Emma Navarro, taking the match to three sets but ultimately falling 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 on Margaret Court Arena.

Wang showed resilience by breaking first in the second set to lead 3-1 and maintained her momentum to force a decider. She started strong in the final set, leading 2-0, but Navarro fought back, leveling the score at 2-2 and then again at 4-4. The American held her serve at a critical moment to go ahead 5-4 and managed to break Wang’s serve to clinch the match.

Earlier in the day, Zhang faced a tough match against Yulia Putintseva, ending with a 6-2, 6-1 loss. Wang Yafan was also defeated by Daria Kasatkina with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-0.

Despite the early exits, the Chinese players showcased determination and skill, leaving fans hopeful for future tournaments.
