Ski mountaineering, or “skimo,” is set to thrill audiences as it makes its debut at the Asian Winter Games in Harbin, northeast China, this year. Combining uphill climbs, downhill descents, and mountaineering techniques, skimo tests athletes’ endurance and skill through snow-covered mountains.
Since the first World Championships in 2002, ski mountaineering has grown into a thrilling international competition. Athletes race through extreme conditions, ascending nearly 2,000 meters while carrying essential gear like ice axes, ropes, and avalanche detectors.
The sport recently featured in the 14th National Winter Games in Hulunbuir, north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, on February 1, 2024. Now, it’s taking the spotlight on the Asian stage with three events scheduled in Harbin.
Get ready to witness this exhilarating sport as athletes from across Asia compete in the ultimate test of stamina and skill!
