Speed Skater Gao Shares Recovery Journey and Future Goals
Olympic speed skating champion Gao, 27, is gearing up for a fresh start as he eyes the upcoming Asian Winter Games and the 2026 Winter Olympics. In an exclusive interview on CGTN’s Talk Sports series with Sports Scene’s Shen Xiang, Gao opened up about his journey of recovery since clinching gold at the Beijing 2022 Games.
“After the triumph in Beijing, I needed time to heal and refocus,” Gao shared. “Recovery wasn’t just physical but also mental. Now, I’m ready to push forward.”
Gao reflected fondly on his previous experiences at the Asian Winter Games. “Standing atop the podium in 2017 was unforgettable,” he reminisced. “Harbin holds a special place in my heart, and I’m excited that it’s hosting the Games this February.”
He also spoke about his favorite spots in Harbin, highlighting the city’s vibrant culture and winter charm. “Harbin is more than just ice and snow; it’s a community that supports and inspires athletes like me.”
Addressing American speed skater Jordan Stolz’s recent achievement in breaking his track records, Gao expressed admiration. “Records are meant to be broken,” he said with a smile. “It motivates me to train harder.”
Gao discussed the challenges of managing injuries and the importance of balancing training with personal life. “It’s crucial to listen to your body,” he emphasized. “I’ve learned that rest and recovery are as important as the hours on the ice.”
As a veteran on the national team, Gao is enthusiastic about the rising talents in China’s speed skating scene. “There are so many young skaters with incredible potential,” he noted. “I aim to guide them and continue striving for breakthroughs in my own career.”
With his sights set on future successes, Gao remains a symbol of dedication and perseverance. “The journey continues,” he affirmed. “I’m excited for what’s ahead.”
