China Takes Commanding Lead in Davis Cup Playoff

China’s top tennis star Zhang Zhizhen delivered a strong performance on Friday, propelling his team to a 2-0 lead over Montenegro in the Davis Cup World Group II playoff series held at the Hengqin International Tennis Center.

Facing Montenegro’s Aleksa Krivokapic, Zhang, 28, showcased his skill by converting his second break point to seize a 2-1 advantage in the first set. He maintained his momentum to win the set 6-4. In the second set, Zhang broke serve in the fifth game, repeating his 6-4 success to secure the match.

“I gave my best in the match, and the break in the fifth game of the second set was truly inspiring for me,” Zhang said after the victory. “I want to express my gratitude to all the fans, especially during the Chinese Spring Festival.”

Earlier in the day, China’s Cui Jie set the tone for the host nation by defeating Petar Jovanovic 6-4, 7-6(4), giving China an early lead in the best-of-five series.

The Chinese team is now just one win away from clinching the series and moving closer to the Davis Cup World Group II finals. The playoff will continue with doubles and reverse singles matches, where China will aim to capitalize on their advantage.
