Harbin Ignites Spirit Ahead of Asian Winter Games

The city of Harbin came alive on Monday as the torch relay for the 9th Asian Winter Games concluded, signaling the final countdown to the continent’s premier winter sports event. A diverse group of 120 torchbearers, ranging from 16 to 83 years old, carried the flame through iconic landmarks, celebrating unity and athletic excellence.

Leading the relay was Shen Xue, the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics pairs figure skating gold medalist. Shen, who alongside her partner Zhao Hongbo achieved an unprecedented four consecutive golds in the Asian Winter Games, expressed her excitement: “Carrying the torch in my home country is an honor. I hope it inspires the next generation of athletes.”

Other notable torchbearers included Luo Zhihuan, the Chinese mainland’s first speed skating world champion, and Sui Wenjing, the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics pairs figure skating gold medalist. Their participation highlighted the nation’s rich history in winter sports and set an inspiring tone for the upcoming games.

Simultaneously, the first sporting events kicked off with ice hockey matches energizing fans and athletes alike. The host nation is set to make its debut in the mixed doubles curling event on Tuesday, showcasing local talents on the international stage.

The Opening Ceremony is scheduled for this Friday, February 7, with competitions running until February 14. This edition of the Asian Winter Games is poised to be the largest yet, welcoming over 1,270 athletes from 34 nations and regions. The significant increase in participation underscores the growing popularity of winter sports across Asia.

Young fans in Harbin and beyond are eagerly anticipating the games. “It’s amazing to see so many athletes coming to our city,” said Li Ming, a 19-year-old student. “I can’t wait to watch the events and cheer for all the participants.”

As the flame burns bright, the spirit of competition and camaraderie is set to warm even the coldest days in Harbin. Let the games begin!
