Australia Edge China to Seal Perfect Group Stage at U20 Asian Cup

Australia Edges Past China 2-1 to Top Group at U20 Asian Cup

Australia secured the top spot in Group A of the AFC Under-20 Asian Cup with a narrow 2-1 victory over hosts China in Shenzhen. Both teams had already confirmed their places in the knockout stage and made several changes to their line-ups for this final group match.

The Young Socceroos struck first in the 23rd minute when Medin Memeti capitalized on a goalkeeping error by Liu Qiwei, slipping the ball between his legs. Just two minutes later, Louis Agosti doubled Australia’s lead with a shot that deflected off Qi Qiancheng, leaving the Chinese defense stunned.

China responded tenaciously, and just before the half-hour mark, Kuai Jiwen volleyed home a precise cross from Xu Junchi, reducing the deficit to 2-1. The second half saw the hosts dominate possession and create several scoring opportunities. Substitute Mao Weijie came close to equalizing in the 61st minute but headed wide from close range.

Despite relentless pressure from China, Australia held firm to maintain their lead until the final whistle. The victory ensures Australia finishes the group stage with a perfect record, while China progresses to the quarterfinals as runners-up.

Both teams will now prepare for their upcoming knockout stage matches, aiming to continue their pursuit of the AFC Under-20 Asian Cup title.
