One year Countdown Celebration Held for 2026 Winter Paralympic Games

Countdown Begins: 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Paralympics Just One Year Away

The one-year countdown to the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Paralympic Games kicked off with a vibrant celebration in Milan on Wednesday. International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Andrew Parsons declared that the upcoming event is set to be “the most beautiful Paralympic Winter Games yet,” capturing the hearts of spectators and TV audiences around the world.

Scheduled from March 6 to 15, 2026, the games will host approximately 665 athletes from 50 countries and regions, competing in six thrilling sports for a total of 79 gold medals. The historic Arena di Verona will stage the opening ceremony, while the closing ceremony will light up the Ice Stadium in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

“We’re excited to showcase the resilience and determination of our Paralympic athletes,” Parsons said. “From the tactical precision of wheelchair curling to the speed and endurance of Para cross-country skiing, every sport will inspire and captivate.”

Competitions will unfold across northern Italy’s picturesque landscapes. Milan will host Para ice hockey, the scenic Val di Fiemme will see Para biathlon and Para cross-country skiing, and the majestic Dolomites will be the backdrop for Para alpine skiing, Para snowboard, and wheelchair curling in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

As part of the countdown, ticket sales have officially opened. A 24-hour pre-sale for Visa cardholders began on Wednesday, followed by public sales starting Thursday. Over 89% of tickets are priced at 35 euros (about $37.85) or less, with children’s tickets starting at just 10 euros (about $10.81). More than 200,000 low-cost tickets aim to make the games accessible to all.

The Paralympic torch relay promises to unite communities, spanning 11 days and covering 2,000 kilometers with 501 torchbearers. Organizers emphasize that this relay is not just a countdown to the Games but a powerful platform to promote inclusivity and unity worldwide.

“Milano-Cortina 2026 will be more than just a sports competition,” Parsons added. “It will serve as a catalyst for social change and inclusivity.”
