Argentina has begun the long-awaited trial over the death of football legend Diego Maradona, igniting emotions across a nation that idolizes the World Cup hero. More than four years after his passing in November 2020, seven members of his medical team are facing charges of negligent homicide.
On Tuesday, the accused, including Maradona’s former nurses, brain surgeon, and psychiatrist, arrived at the San Isidro Appeals Court on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Outside the courthouse, passionate fans held placards reading “Justice for D10S,” a play on Maradona’s iconic jersey number 10 and the Spanish word for God, reflecting his almost divine status in Argentina.
Maradona, celebrated globally and immortalized in Argentina through murals and tattoos, is considered one of football’s greatest ever players. His sudden death at age 60 from heart failure, while recovering from brain surgery to remove a blood clot, shocked the world and led to widespread grief.
Prosecutors have described the medical care Maradona received as “deficient and reckless,” alleging that protocols were broken and that his home recovery conditions were a “theater of horror.” They accuse the medical professionals of failing to provide the necessary care, which they argue led to Maradona’s untimely death.
The defense, however, contends that Maradona’s death was due to an “unforeseeable” cardiac event and that home hospitalization was agreed upon by both doctors and Maradona’s family. “New evidence proves that there is no criminal responsibility for Maradona’s death on the part of any of the accused,” said a lawyer representing psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov.
The trial is expected to be a lengthy and emotionally charged saga, with fans and family members seeking answers and justice for a national icon. If convicted, the accused could face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years.
