Beijing witnessed an exhilarating display of speed and skill on Saturday as China’s Liu Shaoang secured the bronze medal in the men’s 1,500 meters at the International Skating Union (ISU) World Short Track Championships.
As the only home skater in the final, Liu faced fierce competition. Canada’s William Dandjinou and Belgium’s Stijn Desmet took firm control of the top two positions from the penultimate lap, while Liu battled alongside the Netherlands’ Jens van’t Wout. In a dramatic finish, Dandjinou clinched gold with a time of 2:15.09, narrowly edging out Desmet by just 0.02 seconds.
Van’t Wout initially crossed the line in third place but was disqualified for a rules violation, elevating Liu to the bronze position with a time of 2:15.89. Reflecting on his performance, Liu expressed determination: “This is our first final here, and I’m happy we won bronze. But we’ll keep going because what we really want is gold.”
In other events, Canada’s Steven Dubois claimed victory in the men’s 500 meters, finishing in 40.008 seconds. Denis Nikisha of Kazakhstan took silver, and van’t Wout earned the bronze.
