In a historic moment at the 144th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Greece, Thomas Bach was named Honorary Life President of the IOC on Wednesday. The announcement comes as Bach prepares to step down in June after 12 years leading the global Olympic movement.
The session, held at the coastal resort of Costa Navarino, saw IOC members rise in unison, applauding the approval of the proposal. The 71-year-old sports leader appeared moved, taking a moment of quiet reflection as he absorbed the scene—a testament to his influential journey over more than a decade.
Amid a standing ovation, Bach approached the podium, his voice filled with emotion. “I accept this great honor with deep humility, for two reasons,” he began. “First, as I have always said, today's achievements are not those of one individual, but of all of us together. Every single one of you has contributed in your own way to this success.”
Bach, who won an Olympic gold medal in fencing in 1976, has been a significant figure in international sports. Under his leadership, the IOC navigated challenges like the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized unity and the Olympic values throughout his tenure.
“I have always been grateful for the privilege of working in the Olympic Movement,” he said. “After my career as an athlete, I was lucky to continue living my passion for sport. My Olympic gold medal changed my life, and as President of the IOC, I had the opportunity to help change the lives of others.”
As his tenure concludes on June 23, Olympic Day, Bach expressed confidence in the future of the Olympic Movement. “I can say with a clear conscience that I have given my all to the Olympic Movement. Now, it is time for new leadership. The leader you elect tomorrow will guide the Movement to an even brighter future—because in sport, yesterday's achievements are merely the foundation for tomorrow's success.”
The IOC will elect its 10th President on Thursday, ushering in a new era of leadership. Bach's legacy leaves a lasting impact on athletes and sports enthusiasts worldwide, inspiring the next generation to uphold the spirit of the Olympics.
