China’s Yu Zaiqing Honored with IOC Honorary Membership

China’s Yu Zaiqing, a prominent figure in the sports world, has been elected as an honorary member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) during a ceremony in Greece.

Yu, who has been an IOC member since 2000, served as Vice-President of the IOC twice, from 2008 to 2012 and from 2014 to 2022. As his tenure comes to an end this year, he was also awarded the prestigious Olympic Order, the highest honor granted by the IOC.

In his acceptance speech, the 73-year-old expressed gratitude and highlighted that the recognition reflects not just his efforts but also China’s significant contributions to the Olympic movement.

“While the Olympic Order is formally bestowed upon me, it also acknowledges China’s contributions to the Olympic movement,” Yu said. “We successfully hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics, the 2022 Winter Olympics, and the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. Organizing the Olympics is the greatest contribution we can make to the IOC and the Olympic movement. Therefore, this award not only recognizes my efforts but also honors our country.”

Yu’s election as an honorary member underscores the increasing role China has played in promoting global sports and fostering international cooperation through the Olympics.
