Thomas Muller to Leave Bayern Munich After 25 Years

End of an Era: Thomas Müller to Leave Bayern Munich After 25 Years

An era is coming to a close at Bayern Munich as Thomas Müller, one of football’s most iconic figures, announces his departure from the club after an incredible 25-year journey.

The 35-year-old forward confirmed in an open letter on Saturday that he will leave when his contract expires this summer. The announcement came a day after Bayern’s 3-1 victory over Augsburg. Müller’s final appearances for the club will be at this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

“This is not a day like any other,” Müller wrote. “It has been an incredible journey, full of unforgettable experiences and triumphs. I am grateful to have had this career at my boyhood club.”

Joining Bayern’s academy at just 10 years old in 2000, Müller rose through the ranks to become a cornerstone of the team. Since his senior debut in 2008, he has made a record 743 competitive appearances, scoring 247 goals and providing 273 assists.

His trophy cabinet boasts 12 Bundesliga titles, six German Cups, two UEFA Champions League trophies, two FIFA Club World Cups, and a FIFA World Cup title with Germany in 2014.

Despite his desire to continue playing for Bayern, the club decided not to offer him a new contract beyond this season. “Even though it wasn’t my personal wish, I respect the club’s decision. I know it wasn’t easy for those responsible,” Müller said.

Bayern chairman Jan-Christian Dreesen praised Müller’s immense contribution, calling him “one of the greatest personalities this club has ever had.” Sporting director Max Eberl highlighted the “honest and respectful” nature of the discussions, while President Herbert Hainer added, “Thomas is the epitome of a Bavarian fairytale career.”

While Müller has not yet revealed his future plans, his immediate focus remains clear: “We will give everything to bring the Bundesliga title back to Munich and achieve our dream of the ‘Finale Dahoam’.”

Bayern Munich plans to honor Müller with a farewell match, celebrating his extraordinary legacy and the indelible mark he has left on the club.
