Teenage Shooting Sensation Wang Zifei Claims First ISSF World Cup Gold
Eighteen-year-old Chinese shooter Wang Zifei made a stunning breakthrough on Monday, clinching her first ISSF World Cup gold medal in the women’s 10m air rifle event in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Wang demonstrated exceptional skill and composure throughout the competition. After the qualification round, she was in third place, trailing South Korea’s Kwon Eun-ji by 1.7 points. Despite the initial gap, Wang remained unfazed.
In the final, Olympic bronze medalist Audrey Gogniat of Switzerland took an early lead. However, Wang steadily climbed the ranks, staying among the top three after the first 10 shots. She seized the lead during the second elimination round with a series of precise inner-ten shots, showcasing her remarkable talent and determination.
With a final score of 254.1 points, Wang secured the gold medal, narrowly missing the world record by just 0.4 points—a record held by her compatriot Huang Yuting. Kwon claimed the silver with 253.1 points, marking another strong performance on the World Cup stage. Gogniat took home the bronze medal.
This victory adds to Wang’s growing list of accomplishments. Last year, she excelled at the Junior World Championships in Lima, Peru, where she won gold medals in both the women’s and mixed team 10m air rifle events. She also secured a silver medal at the ISSF World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan, further establishing herself as a rising star in the shooting world.
The ISSF World Cup in Buenos Aires continues on Tuesday with the women’s 10m air pistol and men’s 25m rapid fire pistol finals, promising more exciting action from the world’s top shooters.
