Milano Cortina 2026 Unveils essential Winter Olympic Torch

Milano Cortina 2026 Reveals Eco-Friendly ‘Essential’ Olympic Torch

The organizers of the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina have unveiled the official torch named “Essential” that will carry the flame during the Games. The torch highlights themes of Italian design, technological innovation, and environmental sustainability.

The unveiling took place simultaneously at the Triennale di Milano in Italy and at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, symbolizing the international spirit of the Olympics and the cultural heritage of Italy. Olympic champion Stefania Belmondo and Paralympic gold medalist Bebe Vio presented the torch in Milan, while Paralympic champion Martina Caironi and figure skater Carolina Kostner participated in the Osaka reveal.

Designed by Studio Carlo Ratti Associati in collaboration with Italian energy company Eni and Versalis, the “Essential” torch pays tribute to simplicity and strength. Its sleek, minimalist form with an iridescent finish puts the flame at the forefront. Two versions were introduced: a blue-green torch for the Olympic Games and a bronze one for the Paralympic Games.

Weighing just over one kilogram and produced entirely in Italy, the torch is made from a recycled aluminum and brass alloy. Emphasizing sustainability, the torch is refillable and reusable up to ten times, significantly reducing the number of torches needed for the relay.

The torch is powered by bio-LPG, a renewable fuel derived from waste materials like used cooking oil and animal fats. This fuel is produced at Eni’s biorefinery in Gela, Sicily. For the first time, the burner—the technological heart of the torch—is visible, offering a unique glimpse into the mechanics that keep the Olympic flame alive.

The color schemes of the torches carry deep symbolism. The Olympic torch features “Shades of Sky,” inspired by Italy’s dynamic natural landscapes, evoking movement, hope, and transformation. The Paralympic torch showcases “Mountains of Light,” symbolizing resilience, strength, and the transformative power of sport.

“Each torch is more than a functional object; it’s a cultural icon that embodies the spirit of unity and excellence defining the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” organizers stated. After the relay, the Olympic torch will become part of the official collection at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.

The torches will be on public display at the Italia Pavilion during Expo 2025 in Osaka and at the Triennale di Milano from May until the conclusion of the Games.
