Shanghai, China—Li Haotong delivered a sensational performance on Friday at the 30th Volvo China Open, firing an impressive eight-under-par 63. The home favorite surged to a share of the lead at 10-under-par, joining Finland’s Tapio Pulkkanen and Spain’s Eugenio Chacarra at the top of the leaderboard.
Starting his round seven shots behind, the 29-year-old Li ignited his comeback with four consecutive birdies after teeing off on the back nine. He continued his momentum on the front nine, adding two more birdies and an eagle on the third hole. The 2016 China Open champion capped off his remarkable day with a par at the ninth, setting the stage for an exciting weekend.
Pulkkanen, the overnight leader, couldn’t quite replicate his opening round of 62. The Finn carded four birdies against three bogeys for a one-under-par 70. Despite some challenges, he managed a crucial par save at the 10th hole to maintain his share of the lead.
Chacarra showcased his skill with four straight birdies starting from the fourth hole, including a pinpoint approach shot that landed just feet from the cup at the seventh. The Spaniard, who triumphed at last month’s Indian Open, added another birdie at the 16th to secure his position atop the standings.
Wu Ashun, renowned for being the first Chinese player to win this event a decade ago, tallied a birdie at the 11th. He reached the halfway mark at four-under-par, trailing the leaders by six shots but remaining in contention as the tournament progresses.
As the Volvo China Open heads into the weekend, all eyes are on Li Haotong to see if he can continue his outstanding form and capture another victory on home soil.
