Liu Guoliang, a celebrated figure in the world of table tennis, has stepped down as president of the Chinese Table Tennis Association (CTTA). On Wednesday, Wang Liqin, current vice president of the CTTA and a former Olympic champion, was elected as the new president.
Liu, who achieved a career Grand Slam by winning the Olympic Games, World Championships, and World Cup, was appointed chief coach of China’s national team in 2013. Under his leadership, China dominated the sport, sweeping four gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Elected as CTTA president in 2018 and re-elected in 2023, Liu oversaw China’s remarkable performance, where the team secured nine out of ten Olympic gold medals in table tennis at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Games.
Wang Liqin, 46, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. A two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time World Championships singles champion, Wang retired from the national team in 2013. He has served as the CTTA vice president since 2018, and his election as president marks a new chapter for Chinese table tennis.
The CTTA expressed gratitude for Liu’s contributions and confidence in Wang’s leadership to continue China’s legacy in the sport. Fans worldwide await the future successes of Chinese table tennis under Wang’s guidance.
